Instituto 12 and Leme – Laboratory for Violence Reduction Host an Open Discussion on Violent Organized Crime and Public Security Policies in Rio de Janeiro and Latin America.
During the event, Joana Monteiro, director and cofounder of Leme, will interview Chris Blattman (University of Chicago), Benjamin Lessing (University of Chicago), and Carlos Schmidt-Padilla (UC Berkeley), internationally recognized experts in research on violence, organized crime, and governance in high-crime contexts.
The discussion will cover topics such as:
What science already knows about reducing the power and violence of organized crime.
Successful experiences and the lessons they offer for the Brazilian context.
Paths to rethink public security in Rio de Janeiro and the region.
A unique opportunity for academics, policymakers, journalists, and citizens interested in understanding, based on evidence, how to tackle one of the greatest challenges facing our city and Latin America.
