On April 27, students from the Public Security Leadership Training Program, promoted by Leme in partnership with the Fundação Getulio Vargas (FGV), conducted a technical visit to the Complexo de Gericinó, in Rio de Janeiro. The activity was part of the course program and aimed to bring participants closer to the reality of the prison system.

The activity was attended by Joana Monteiro, executive director and co-founder of Leme; Julia Guerra, director of projects and research and co-founder; Ramón Chaves, executive manager; Vinicius Peçanha, project leader; Ana Figueiredo, public policy analyst; and Thais Lima, associate researcher at Leme.

The visit was organized by Secretary Maria Rosa Nebel and Deputy Secretary-General Leonardo Franceschin, a participant in the program, and was accompanied by the operational deputy secretary, the superintendent, and coordinators of the Gericinó Complex.

During the visit, participants toured three units of the prison system: the Alfredo Tranjan Penitentiary (Bangu II), the Lemos Brito Penitentiary (Bangu VI), and the Talavera Bruce Prison, with the aim of understanding, in practice, aspects related to the management and operation of prison facilities.

The activity sought to present, in a technical and responsible manner, the reality of the prison system, including its routines and main management challenges. It also provided a space for exchange between program participants and professionals working directly in the facilities, contributing to the articulation of different perspectives within public security and the criminal justice system.

About the program

The Public Security Leadership Training Program is an initiative by Leme, carried out in partnership with FGV EBAPE and Universidad EAFIT, aimed at strengthening public sector management in the field of security. The program is designed for professionals from the Civil and Military Police, the prison system, the Public Prosecutor’s Office, and the Judiciary, focusing on the development of technical, analytical, and interinstitutional capacities for the design and implementation of evidence-based public policies.

The program structure combines courses from the master’s program at FGV EBAPE, data analysis, and practical applications, as well as an international immersion in Medellín, Colombia. Throughout the program, participants develop applied projects connected to the concrete challenges of their institutions, promoting the integration of learning into public management practice.
